[Cover Story]

Femininity in all its forms is one that has been up for debate since the dawn of time. With women’s bodies subjected and objectified for the male gaze, there is a shift starting to occur in ways that actually might start to favour the real owners of said bodies – women! Fortunately, positive steps are being taken across platforms to ensure this progressive shift continues.

With a rise in the positive representation of women, there are certain things to thank for the recent shift. Only Fans, an online platform that enables the freedom to post explicit content, has allowed many women to explore the realm of sexual liberation by earning their own money away from the confinements of a patriarchal society. Along with this, female rappers like Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat have introduced a powerful image in the way they present themselves in an all too male centred industry. With songs detailing their sexual experiences and taboo subjects that femininity has long rejected, they are providing positive inspiration for women to relate to.

However, with one step forward comes ten steps back.

With the phrase “The New Normal” entering the rhetoric of a post-pandemic society, fashion has also seen a shift in trends. Spending the past year hidden inside our homes, people are now taking their underwear outside. Inspired by the likes of Charlotte Knowles and Mugler, this trend will be one to carry us through those summer months of those ever-abnormal weather shifts.
